چکیده

Techniques are proposed to dramatically reduce the impact of quantization noise in fractional-N synthesizers, thereby improving the existing tradeoff between phase noise and bandwidth that exists in these systems. The key innovation is the introduction of new techniques to overcome nonidealities in a phase-frequency detector (PFD)/digital-to-analog converter (DAC) structure, which combines the functionality of both phase detector and cancellation DAC into a single element. The proposed architecture achieves better gain matching between the phase-error signal and cancellation DAC than offered by previous approaches. Dynamic element matching techniques are introduced to mitigate the effects of PFD/DAC unit element and timing mismatch on synthesizer phase noise performance. We present behavioral simulations of an example application of this technique that demonstrates 36-dB reduction in broad-band quantization-induced phase noise with the use of a 7-b PFD/DAC. Simulations further demonstrate that fractional spurs are rejected to levels 90 dBc when a low-cost, low-overhead digital gain correction technique is employed.

Low phase noise, high bandwidth frequency synthesis techniques

A quantization noise reduction technique is proposed that allows fractional-N frequency synthesizers to achieve high closed loop bandwidth and low output phase noise simultaneously. Quantization induced phase noise is the bottleneck in state-ofthe-art synthesizer design, and results in a noise-bandwidth tradeoff that typically limits closed loop synthesizer bandwidths to be <100kHz for adequate...

A wide bandwidth fractional-N synthesizer for LTE with phase noise cancellation using a hybrid-ΔΣ-DAC and charge re-timing

This paper presents a 1MHz bandwidth, ΔΣ fractional-N PLL as the frequency synthesizer for LTE. A noise cancellation path composed of a novel hybrid ΔΣ DAC with 9 output bits is incorporated into the PLL in order to cancel the out-of-band phase noise caused by the quantization error. Further, a re-timing circuit is proposed to reduce the nonlinearity in the Charge Pump and provide pulse shaping...

Dual Phase Detector Based Delay Locked Loop for High Speed Applications

In this paper a new architecture for delay locked loops will be presented.  One of problems in phase-frequency detectors (PFD) is static phase offset or reset path delay. The proposed structure decreases the jitter resulted from PFD by switching two PFDs. In this new architecture, a conventional PFD is used before locking of DLL to decrease the amount of phase difference between input and outpu...

In the paper, a programmable phase-locked loop (PLL) based ISM band fractional-N frequency synthesizer, commonly used in wireless communication system, is presented. The third order error-feedback Delta-Sigma modulator and high linearity offset phase frequency detector (PFD)/ Charge Pump (CP) are adopted to reduce close-in phase noise due to ∆Σ quantization noise folding. Automatic calibration ...
